4 January 2021 – We, at the Anti-Red Tape Authority (ARTA), is delighted and at the same time grateful on the news of the signing of the creation of the Department of Migrant Workers mandated to oversee all policies related to the protection of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs). This is a clear demonstration of President Rodrigo Duterte’s leadership that has consistently pushed for the welfare of Filipinos both at home and abroad.
The establishment of the Department of Migrant Workers is a significant boost to the morale of our Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), our modern-day heroes who have kept our economy afloat for decades through their remittances, as there will now be a department dedicated solely to their needs and concerns.
We believe that one of the concerns that the new department can help address is the release of blood money claims. Blood money is the financial compensation awarded to families of OFWs who were killed outside of the country. ARTA is currently working with several agencies including the Department of Foreign Affairs-Office of the Undersecretary for Migrant Workers Affairs (DFA-OUMWA) in the streamlining of the processing of the blood money claims for their speedy release to the affected families, with some dating as far back as 2010.
ARTA commits its full support and assistance to the new agency in order to help them fulfill their goal of delivering better services to our country’s migrant workers.
